Integral Meditation – Wisdom vs. Wilber

In April 2016, Ken Wilber released his new book Integral Meditation, which relates how mindfulness practice needs to be applied developmentally through the various levels he uses. In the audio webinar of this book aired first on April 7th, Wilber claims that these levels have never been revealed before. Well, actually, they have! As this blog shows, they were talked about over 80 years ago through the Ageless Wisdom tradition. This blog shows how Wilber’s new book aligns with these teachings and shows again, where he still needs to catch up.  

In a bold statement, Ken Wilber declares in his April 7th Webinar, that there isn’t just one form of one size fits all mindfulness, there are up to seven or eight different experiences of mindfulness. And, by acknowledging how there are different levels, we see mindfulness meditation changes in very dramatic ways. In a very excited tone he then goes on to declare that not a single meditation system anywhere in the world has any record of his groundbreaking development work.  Unfortunately for Wilber’s excited attitude, that is very far from true. Not only has the Ageless Wisdom teachings had these levels in place for a long time (and much more beyond the eight Wilber is now professing), they have taught different modes of meditation for the various levels and even what may be considered “lines” in Wilber’s system, for a very, very long time as well.

Chela on the Thread: Science of Contact II – Wisdom vs. Wilber

This second post on the Science of Contact attempts to discuss how contact is actually achieved. In truth, we are always in contact, but with what?  Only as we can truly apply viveka (discernment) and meet the prerequisites that put us into resonance with that which we want to contact, can contact with higher levels of Divinity become possible. That is why in the Chela on the Thread stage so much emphasis is put on knowing how to navigate the subtle realms.

As I have been demonstrating when we get to Group 9 in the Ageless Wisdom teachings, which I have correlated to the Chela on the Thread stage, we must get a handle on the subtle realms from a place of increased objectivity and clarity. As we meditate and move into subtle realms caution is necessary. The Yoga Sutras of Pantanjali, comprised of four different books (which Alice Bailey read and commented on), talk about needing to establish a solid moral foundation (the yamas and niyamas) before moving into developing psychic powers, especially regarding Higher and Lower Psychic Powers. This moral foundation has some parallels to what has to be solidly in place by the Accepted Discipleship stage in the Ageless Wisdom teachings. We also have to have developed the capacity to truly think and intuit. In Integral, they refer to this as post-conventional thinking. But, there is more to contact than all of this, which is what this blog is attempting to explore.

Channeling II – Wisdom vs. Wilber

This post continues the discussion on channeling and how we need to get clear about what it is and is not as we move into the Chela on the Thread stage and explore the Science of Contact. In this post I look at what the Ageless Wisdom and Integral teachings have to say about discerning what level contact through channeling comes from.

In the Ageless Wisdom teachings there is a lot said about channeling, or what is called the “Problem of Guidance.” Though we may become skeptical of channeling at the level of Group 6/Orange, only as we reach Group 9/Turquoise and the stages of Accepted Discipleship and especially Chela on the Thread will we have any understanding at all about what channeling is and isn’t. Until that time we will either discount channeling, or become glamoured by it as we approach it in a distorted way. Understanding this, we will now look at the various levels, which the Ageless Wisdom teachings say guidance comes from. We will also look at what Integral has to say.

Channeling I – Wisdom vs. Wilber

This post is connected to the ones on the Chela on the Thread: Science of Contact. To understand this subject more clearly, it is important to take a look at the topic of channeling. This posts begins by looking at what channeling is and how the Ageless Wisdom teachings and Integral have approached it.

Welcome to the world of channeling, a word that implies tuning in somewhere to receive information of some kind. Not so long ago, channeling was a mysterious process. People knew information came from the “inner realms,” they just didn’t try to understand it very much. Even today those at the Group 4/Amber levels of consciousness who do not have very developed minds, give too much weight to channeled information without bothering to really question it. Be it Abraham (channeled by Esther Hicks), Seth (Jane Roberts), Ramtha, the Archangel Michael, the Pleiadians, and so forth, the focus is not so much on what the channeled material actually says, but that it comes from a seemingly “enlightened” and highly evolved source.

States

Following are brief thoughts about parallels between Ageless Wisdom and the Wilber/Integral model related to “states of consciousness.”

Integral/Wilber Model

States of consciousness can be divided into three general categories.

  1. Waking (Gross body)
  2. Sleeping (Subtle body)
  3. Deep Dreamless Sleep  (Causal body).

Everyone, regardless of your stage of development goes through these three stages whenever we fall asleep and wake up.  We have various experiences (or states of experience) when we are in the waking state and in the gross body through the use of the five senses and are in the Alpha brain wave patterns.  Daydreaming means we are still in the gross body, so even though we are in Beta brain wave patterns, these dream-like experiences are still related to waking states.
