Eighty to one hundred years before the Integral movement emerged, Alice Bailey had already been talking about the majority of the components now featured by Integral. To help demonstrate this I have created an “integral type map” of Bailey’s main ideas. I have also added the Integral Map next to Bailey’s to show how the two overlap.

Bailey's Integral Map

Bailey also included the idea of “shadow work” quite extensively as you can plainly see in her books Esoteric Psychology II, Glamour: A World Problem, and her Discipleship in the New Age books (Vol I & Vol II). She speaks of “shadow work” primarily as “cleavages” (or gaps in development) and glamours (distortions of reality that the personality takes hold of to primarily enhance it’s own separative self). Bailey insisted that her students recognize and clean up their cleavages and glamours, much in the same way that the Integral movement is doing today.

Also, here is the Integral Map as it currently exists below.

Integral Map

Integral, to its credit, created the “four-quadrant” system of the “individual and the group” in both “interior and exterior” expression. Though Bailey’s model did not expressly do what Integral did in its four quadrants, you do see that she emphasizes these four quadrants in her many books. Here is a close up of the Integral quadrants.

Integral Quadrants One

Bailey, who wrote between 1919 to 1949 was actually doing much the same thing. Only as you see in the chart I created of her work above, Integral’s interior “I” was seen in Bailey’s stages system (which is much more extensive than Integral has yet developed). Her “interior we” was actually found both in the various instructions she gave to her disciples (see Discipleship in the New Age, Vol. I & II), and it can be found in her Ten Seed Groups. Integral’s Exterior “It” is found in Bailey’s Consciousness of the Atom book and again is emphasized in her Ten Seed Group work. Integral’s Exterior “Its” is found in Bailey’s Ten Seed Group works and can be seen in her book Problems of Humanity.

Also, to see how I believe Bailey’s stages of development line up with Integral’s stages at the time of this post, here are my latest understandings below. If you are new to this chart please note on other posts I have clearly said the colors are my own invention. (I was imitating Integral in doing this). Still, Bailey does give colors for her various planes/levels. I just have not done the research to make my chart line up with exactly what she says. My colors are based mainly on the chakra model.
